Library vs Custom Collection LiDAR

LiDAR Library Data is essentially LiDAR data that a company or organization has already collected, and it can be used by anyone who purchases or obtains rights to it from that company. Engineers or project planners may opt to purchase and utilize LiDAR Library Data due to budget or time constraints.

Here are pros and cons to this type of downloadable data service.


  • As it is previously collected data owned by the company who gathered it, it is typically sold at a lower price, as it can be re-sold several times to different clients.
  • Since the data has already been collected it can generally be downloaded easily, often available to the client the next day
  • Large areas can be obtained for a comparatively low cost.


  • As there is often a minimum area size that must be purchased for download, the client might end up paying for excess areas that they would not need.
  • The data may be older or out-dated, and if so it may be missing key changes to the landscape that would affect the client’s overall project. An update might not be available for years
  • Since the data is previously collected from past flights it might not include all the areas that the clients need, essentially leaving gaps.

Based on a client’s project requirements or parameters LiDAR Library data may or may not be suitable for some projects. If it were not, then new aerial LiDAR data would have to be collected.

Not long ago that option may have been cost prohibitive, but that is no longer the case. As LiDAR technology and processes continue to evolve and improve, then budget and time constraints need no longer prevent the collection of new, relevant data. Due to these advances in LiDAR technology and processes SkyTech Solutions is able to offer an innovative and cost-effective service: Multi-Temporal aerial LiDAR collection for custom areas. Borrow Pit As-Builts from Sonar and HD LiDAR Fusion

The Borrow Pits

Water storage pits are built to support operations in many industries including oil and gas and agricultural operations. Reliable sources of collected runoff water are critical to many industries and collection points must be monitored and maintained like any other asset. Ranging in size from 50 meters to several hundred on a side and not necessarily having good foot or vehicle access, these pits can be a nuisance to survey with conventional methods.


Stricter new provincial regulations mean that regulatory agencies are now ensuring that proper design parameters were used in the construction of existing pits. It is also possible that companies may acquire or use pits for which they do not have engineering information, as they may not have been involved in the building and design phase.

The Data

Since it is impractical to drain these pits to obtain accurate total depth, slope and total capacities, the use of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) equipped with Sonar in combination with High Density LiDAR has allowed Skytech to gather these parameters and provide accurate as-builts without the need to empty the storage pits.

The Result

The image above is an example of the High Density aerial LiDAR gathered from one of these pits. This data is then summarized in a short PDF deliverable displaying all critical pit information which has been extracted. Our clients have found this deliverable and the meshing of Sonar and LiDAR capabilities to be extremely useful to accurately show their compliance to the new regulations.

Viva Las LiDAR

The image above showcases an example of mobile LiDAR data, displaying virtually all nearby surface features in great detail. SkyTech gathered this data during a recent mobile LiDAR project in Las Vegas. On the right side of this image the Mirage Hotel is visible, and several other types of structures and features are well resolved, such as palm trees, poles, posts, signs, and pedestrian areas. This collection is from one pass of the vehicle at 60 km per hour, however this data is rich and accurate enough to detect virtually any feature along the road. With technological developments offering increased density, accuracy, and reduced collection costs, this type of data is available to more projects than ever before.

Mobile LiDAR (or mobile laser scanning) is a surveying method involving one or more laser scanners being mounted to a moving vehicle to gather spatial data. There is a wide range of applications for this technology including inspection of road infrastructure and road surface conditions, as well as complete asset management for urban and industrial areas.

With the use of post processing software, and high density data, the extraction and categorization of complex features from basic point clouds is performed, rapidly identifying light poles, intersection features, trees, culvert bases, and road markings. Essentially all features visible to the laser can be identified. This is particularly useful for engineers looking to obtain accurate positional data at a fraction of the cost and turnaround time compared to conventional methods.
